From the series Salish Sea, live aboard boats in Ganges Harbour beneath a just-visible sun peeking through a dense morning fog. This particularly calm morning made it possible to capture perfect reflections at slack tide. 

Michael Levy’s fine art analog photographs are recorded on various film emulsions with cameras and lenses dating back as far as the 1930s. He custom prints each photograph on archival, 100% heavyweight cotton rag papers in his studio on Salt Spring Island. This photograph was created using Kodak Tri-X 400 film that expired in 2004, lending the final print an other-worldly quality that comes from the aging of the emulsion. Hand-held using a Rolleiflex K4A camera manufactured in 1954.

Michael Levy's introduction to the photographic process took place when he was a young man living with his family in Belgium. He enrolled in a basic black and white darkroom course and processed and printed his first roll of film in 1984. He works in both digital and analog photography and has focused primarily on nature, wildlife and landscape photography, using only natural light. After publishing three successful coffee table books about Salt Spring, he is now redirecting his work to focus on fine art.
